What is an Osteopath?

An osteopath is a highly trained healthcare professional who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions — including pain or injury affecting muscles, spine, joints, nerves, and related tissues.

Osteopaths are recognised Allied Health Professionals by the NHS, and are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. They complete a minimum of four to five years at university, including over 1,000 hours of clinical training, to qualify and register.

Using skilled, hands-on therapy and rehabilitation, osteopaths aim to relieve pain, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural ability to recover — in a way that’s effective, gentle, and tailored to your needs.

What to Expect

If it’s your first time visiting an osteopath in Birmingham, here’s what you can expect. At Healthy Bodies Clinic, we aim to make your visit as clear and comfortable as possible. From the moment you arrive, we’ll guide you through each step — from your consultation and assessment to treatment and aftercare — so you know exactly what to expect and feel confident throughout your visit.

We offer free on-site parking at our osteopathy clinic in Birmingham. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted and shown to our comfortable waiting area. Toilets are available when you’re in the treatment room. Your practitioner will collect you at the time of your appointment to guide you through your first appointment.

Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may be asked to remove certain layers for assessment or treatment, but we’ll always ensure your privacy and comfort.

We’ll start with a 1:1 discussion to understand your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and goals. This helps us build a clear picture of your situation before beginning treatment.

We’ll assess your posture, movement, and joint function. This is a hands-on process, but everything will be clearly explained and done with your consent.

If appropriate, you’ll receive hands-on treatment and rehabilitation during your first session. This may include massage, joint mobilisation, or exercises — all tailored to your needs.

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s going on and what happens next. If follow-up sessions are needed, we’ll outline a personalised plan based on your goals and response to treatment.

Osteopathy FAQ’s

The osteopathic approach to health is holistic and often different from what people are used to — which naturally leads to questions. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we receive about osteopathy, osteopaths, and how treatment works. We hope you find it helpful. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, feel free to contact us.

Osteopaths are regulated primary healthcare professionals, qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. You don’t need a GP referral to consult an osteopath, making them an accessible option for addressing muscle, joint, nerve, and related tissue concerns.

While both osteopaths and chiropractors are trained to address musculoskeletal issues, osteopaths adopt a holistic approach, considering the entire body’s function and its interconnected systems. Osteopathic sessions typically last between 30 to 45 minutes, allowing for a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan, whereas chiropractic sessions often focus on spinal adjustments and may be shorter in duration.

Osteopathy is recognised as one of the 14 Allied Health Professions within the NHS. However, NHS-funded osteopathic treatments are limited to specific regions. Osteopathy in Birmingham and Solihull is typically paid for privately or through health insurance. To determine if osteopathy is available through the NHS in your area, consult your GP or local Clinical Commissioning Group.

Osteopathy is widely regarded as a safe and effective treatment modality. Osteopaths undergo extensive training to ensure patient safety and are adept at tailoring treatments to individual needs. While some patients might experience mild soreness or stiffness after a session, these effects are typically short-lived and resolve within 1–2 days.
