About Corrective Exercise

Corrective Exercise is used to restore the correct posture and functional movement of the human body. It can be an integral part of a rehabilitation programme, or it can be integrated into any fitness training programme to make you feel great and prevent those unnecessary aches, pains and injures.

For many of us, modern life is quite sedentary. For example, a great deal of the population now spend much of their day driving or sitting at a desk, and typically, spend much of their evening watching TV. Unfortunately, being confined to these positions for long duration's can have serious implications for the function and therefore the health of the body.

Eventually, the body begins to adapt to the positions favored most, with predictable patterns of dysfunction developing as a result. Such as rounded shoulders, forward head postures, rounded upper backs and increased low back curves.

These predictable patterns of dysfunction are commonly described as lower and upper crossed syndromes. A condition where the functional relationship between muscles and becomes compromised, leading to pain and degeneration of the joints and soft tissues including muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia.

Thankfully, the onset of poor posture and poor movement capabilities can be defeated with regular corrective exercise by integrating specific: stretches, movements, postures, breathing drills, foam rolling techniques and strength exercises.

Examples of Corrective Exercise

In order to defeat the onset of poor posture, and to restore balance and harmony to the necessary muscles and joints, it is important to stretch, strengthen and move in specific ways. Unlike other modalities such as yoga, or pilates, where everybody is instructed to do the same thing, particularly in a class setting, corrective exercise is tailored to the individual to meet their specific limitations or restrictions.

For example, some individuals may benefit hugely from stretching there hamstrings. However, for some individuals, stretching there hamstrings could be a huge contraindication, regardless of whether the hamstrings 'feel tight' or not. For instance, stretching the hamstrings is often contraindicated in patients with acute or chronic low back pain.

To give an example of corrective exercise, consider the rounding shoulders, rounding upper backs, forward head postures and dowagers hump of the neck in individuals sitting for long duration's, who have developed the predictable upper crossed syndrome. Most of whom would benefit hugely from stretching the muscles of the pecs and upper back / neck. An area where people commonly experience tension and headaches. Coupled with strengthening of the often weak muscles of the front of the neck and shoulder blade.
